Auto Fit Labels

The Auto Fit Labels option lets you toggle between "auto fitting" the labels to the space available on the gauge and using fixed sizes for the Label text. By default, the labels displayed on a gauge "auto fit" to the space available using the font settings in the determine the relative proportions of the auto-fitted labels. When Auto Fit is off, the font sizes are determined using the Gauge Labels settings only.

Enabling / Disabling Auto Fit Labels

Component Ribbon

To switch Auto Fit labels on or off:

  1. Click the Gauge tab to open the Component ribbon.
  2. Click Auto Fit Labels.

When Auto Fit is off, the font sizes will not resize with the gauge and will instead be determined using the Gauge Labels settings.

Formatting Panel

Alternatively, in the Gauge Charts view of the Formatting panel:

  1. If the Formatting panel is not currently open, open it:
    • Click Format Visual on the Component ribbon.
    • Click on the Selection Formatting tool from the toolbar, and click the Gauge that you want to format.
  2. In the Formatting panel, select:
    • Gauge Charts - From the top drop-down.
    • Settings - From the tabs.
  3. At the bottom of the panel is an Auto Fit Labels checkbox. Select or clear this field to "auto fit" the labels to fill the space available or fix the sizes and use the font sizes determined using the Gauge Labels settings instead.

Present

It is important to note that the scaling that you can perform in Discover, is also available in Present. In Present you can also enable and disable Auto Fit Labels on the right-click menu, under Visual Options.

Example: Auto Fit Labels

If you have Auto Fit Labels enabled, and resize your canvas, the labels resize to fit the available space. This means that the appearance of the labels on your Gauge chart changes:

  • When you resize your browser.
  • When you change the trellising that controls how many gauges are shown in one view. For more information, see Custom Trellising.
  • When you "Scale to Fit" your visualization. For more information, see Gauge Formatting.
  • And so on.

Note: Where the Auto Fit Labels option is enabled, the sizes of your labels (entered in the Gauge Charts view of the Formatting panel) still affect the size of the text in the gauge. Instead of these values setting the exact size of the text, they allow the Auto Fit function to find a relative size for the different parts of the label when the available space resizes.
